In October of 2020 I was approached by a group of folks who were a part of an Illustrator beta group about working on a series of patterns or designs to print on face masks during the pandemic. I don’t know if the project ever saw the light of day, but I did finish these patterns using Illustrator on the iPad.
Wild Things
At first glance this is simply a floral pattern, but if you look closely some of the flower shapes actually represent virus structures. This was a subtle nod to how flowers and viruses are living things and a part of the world we live in.

Bubbles
I wanted to tell a story through at least one of my designs, and this one also has a few different ideas going on. There are all of these bubbles floating and inside these bubbles are scenes from life. I wanted to remind people that hand washing and social distancing are keys to protecting ourselves with the bubbles acting as barriers. I also really wanted to humanize the current situation. All of the bubbles contain events still happening, maybe not the same as we want, but life goes on. Not only are we protecting these moments now, but by taking action we are ensuring that important moments, and life in general, will continue to happen in the future.

Donuts
The donut mask is really just a fun one. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love donuts—I always start out my live streams introducing myself as a UI/UX designer, and donut connoisseur. During the pandemic I was missing donuts, and this was sort of an homage to them. This one is a really playful style, and I was able to finish it quite fast. It was nice to see how easily and quickly I can recreate an idea in the style I want in Illustrator on the iPad.
