Apartment Greenhouse. September 2023

This project was inspired by a building we used to walk past every time we visited Tyler Village in Cleveland. It was seemingly an old apartment building with an entry way with a large glass window. Inside someone had filled the entire entrance with potted plants making it impossible to actually use as an entryway. The plants seem to have taken over and grown wild in the space over time, and I always wondered if someone was watering them or if the entryway itself had become a sort of self-sustaining terrarium. Most of the plants were tropical house plants that wouldn’t survive the cold Cleveland winter without a heat source furthering the mystery.

Sketches & Notes

I worked on this during several live streams where the chat offered a ton of plant recommendations. In order to make the plants, I created individual leaves for the most part, and then used brushes and envelope distorts in Illustrator to manipulate them.
