I had never done a live stream on Adobe Live using Adobe InDesign, so this was a first in a way. I do use it a lot when making multipage documents, especially labels, business cards, and things that need a similar layout with different information using Data Merge. This was a fun way to demonstrate that process by creating some very timely candle designs for autumn with an October live stream.

Final Labels

It’s really important when creating a set of labels to create consistency while still having each feel unique. In this case the layouts were all the same, they used the same color palette, and the general size and number of elements in each pattern were the same. The individual illustrations and the colors varied between each, with each using 2-3 colors from the larger color palette, creating a cohesive yet individualized look.

Illustrations

In order to focus on the layout and Data Merge process for these candles, I worked on the copy and art assets on my personal live streams the weekend before. I based the illustrations on the names we came up with in the chat, ensuring there were larger and smaller elements I could repeat in the pattern swatches in Adobe Illustrator to create visual texture.

Cozy Autumn Candles, sketches and art assets. moons, suns, campfire, sticks with marshmallow, pinecone, sweater with racoon, orange slice, leaves, logs, cauldron, tea kettle, mug, book open, and ghosts. Color palette along the bottom maroon, red orange, orage, yellow, light green, dark green, dark teal, teal, purple.

I also put together some composition sketches in grayscale to brainstorm some layout options for the Adobe Live event and let the chat vote on their favorites. The black fills represent the pattern and illustration area, while the gray represents the space for copy.

Mock-ups

Finally after the stream I put together some mock-ups using the mock-up tool in Adobe Illustrator to visualize how these could look. I chose the amber glass jars since they felt very autumn to me and fit with the theme.
