It was time for another ChipSong Book release from Yoann Turpin, this is the 4th one in the series that I’ve worked on, and the 13th in the series overall. The others I’ve done have been landscapes in one way or another, but for this one Yoann had a specific idea. He requested a young boy with a bowl cut, viewed from behind, playing a video game console. I had wanted to try a cutaway isometric room for a while so this seemed like a good opportunity to try it out. It also created a fun opportunity to add the previous album covers as posters in the room.

Sketches & Color Tests
With the previous ChipSong Book, Volume 12, I did some composition sketches and then a color test beforehand, and I think it was valuable so I did the same thing this time as well. It gave me an opportunity to test out the isometric room and ensure the composition with the album information all worked well. Although the final does differentiate quite a bit from the sketch, you can see I had most of the components and placement already in mind.

Since I went with the isometric space, I was able to use the 3D Effects in Illustrator to create a lot of small and detailed items to place around the room to help tell the story, and set the stage. I think these elements help sell the scene and make it feel real and alive.
