I think it’s every designers bucket list project to create a coffee brand, so I was quite excited when the folks from Buildings and Food reached out about a coffee concept they were starting working on. It was cool to be involved from the very early days of the project, they hadn’t even settled on a name for it yet, to help shape the idea. This was a branding project from the ground up (no pun intended), but it was also a packaging project as well designing coffee bags for retail and wholesale, as well as a subscription box concept. I had a lot of fun with this project which was pretty out there and different for a coffee brand.

Concepts
We played around with a bunch of ideas. Obviously the whole peristyle walled garden concept, as well as day and night. Overall the look and feel is very retrofuturism but in a classical way, not the neon purple and pink, Y2K aesthetic, typically associated with the style.

Brand Traits
- Delightful and unexpected but not cute
- Embellishments but not excess, no “junk”
- Should be Intentional, ritualistic, but not burdensome
- Should reflect good craft
- Tongue-in-cheek humor
- Sun/Moon; Morning Coffee and Restaurant after Dinner Coffee

Retail Coffee Bags
These are the retail bag designs in each colorway. The favorite that they ultimately went with for the initial run was the black and gold. The entire bag was design with the brand in mind. We sourced a producer that could provide the specific needs for the bags.

Subscription Boxes
The subscription boxes are designed to contain a bag of coffee, with the potential for other items (mug, scoop, etc…) and more information about the coffee including suggested preparation.
