A new album from Yoann Turpin, and some new art to go along with it. Yoann and I have worked on quite a collection of album covers now, so of course when he sent me his latest work of musical genius, I was excited to dive in. This is the second volume in this series, Ethnicology Volume 2. I worked on the cover art for this in January 2021. I am hoping that the feel good funky vibes in this album carry throughout 2021.

Right away when listening to the album, I knew that I wanted to explore patterns. The layered textures of the music needed to be reflected in the visuals. I also wanted to keep the spirit of the first Ethnicology album art. The dark background let me keep the colors of the patterns and text really vibrant with good contrast. The patterns themselves are all unique, however if you look at the details you’ll find they’re all made up of similar motifs and simple geometric shapes and lines. They all come together in a grid to create a cohesive composition.

A majority of the composition and pattern design work was done during the two livestreams, with the final patterns and details added later to finish the illustration.
